Aebi Schmidt UK is aiming to take safety to another level with its new Street King 660 truck-mounted sweeper which is jam-packed with the very latest safety features and is being billed as the safest sweeper ever assembled.
The new product development, which was unveiled at the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone recently where it swept the track between races, is based around Volvo’s acclaimed FMX 4×2 rigid chassis with full air suspension and a three star DVS (Direct Vision Standard) rating.
And the safety features have been further enhanced by Aebi Schmidt’s collaboration with Leeds head-quartered vehicle safety specialists, SM UK, to add further levels of safety to the new sweeper.
Volvo‘s FMX has a myriad of inbuilt safety features. These include the Front Short Range Assist which helps reduce collisions by alerting the driver when a pedestrian or cyclist is detected in the risk area at the front of the truck.
Meanwhile, Side Collision Avoidance Support is designed to reduce the risk of collisions when the truck turns or changes lanes by monitoring the areas at the sides of the vehicle and warning the driver when other road users are in them. Offered on both sides of the truck, this feature exceeds upcoming regulatory requirements.
Then there is Collision Warning with Emergency Brake, Volvo Trucks’ advanced emergency braking system which has long exceeded legal regulations to help prevent rear end collisions., using the latest radar and camera technology at the front of the truck.
Advanced driver safety (ADS) systems include Driver Alert Support, Intelligent Speed Assist and Lane Keeping Support, while the Reversing Camera contributes to better safety by offering an excellent field of view behind the truck during reversing, increasing the driver’s control of the surroundings.
And the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System features improved sensors mounted on the tyre rims that can warn the driver of low pressure and any heightened risk of a blowout or flat tyre.
To this array of outstanding safety features, SM UK, one of the country’s leading auto electrical installation companies and one committed to driving vehicle fleet safety, has made a number of further innovative safety additions.
These include SM UK‘s six camera system which includes forward facing, near/offside and reverse cameras with two additional camaeras focused on the SK660‘s sweeper brushes to allow operators to assess their progress. These come with 4G live view and remote footage download capability as well as tracking.
A further addition is SM UK‘s Reverse Smart autonomous braking system, which is based on 30 years‘ experience in auto-braking in HGVs and which uses a specially designed 77Ghz radar to optimise performance, especially in onsite operations.
In the event of an object or individual detected within the pre-set danger zone, the Reverse Smart system triggers an audible warning within the cab. Should the driver fail to respond, the system automatically applies the brakes, bringing the vehicle to a halt for three seconds, safeguarding all those in the danger area and proving far more effective than just applying the parking brake.
Further features include front and rear strobe lights, a white noise reverse alarm and SM UK’s innovative and trade-marked Red Zone system, which clearly marks out the work area around the vehicle, indicating exactly where the vehicle is operating and how much space is needed to allow the operator to work safely.
Edward Barrie, SM UK Business Development Manager (Midlands) said: “In conjunction with all the Volvo factoryfit safe systems, plus the addition of the installation of our innovative safety features, we believe that safety on the new SK660 will be taken to another level, with the focus on prevention, rather than just reducing risk. “
Aebi Schmidt UK sales manager, Matt Elderkin, commented: “By collaborating with Volvo and SM UK in this way, we have sought to achieve the highest safety levels possible on our new SK660, making driver and pedestrian safety paramount.
“We are all thrilled to be able to demonstrate the many safety features the new SK660 will bring,” he added.
