Driving Licence Checking Tool
Licence checks are run by the DVLA, and there are two free GOV.UK services for it — one for drivers looking at their own record, and one for the employer, agency or hire company that needs to see it. Here is what each does, what you need before you start, and where to go.

Check your own licence
See the vehicles you are entitled to drive, any penalty points, endorsements or disqualifications, and when your licence runs out. You can also create a check code so an employer or hire company can see the same record.
What you will need
- Your driving licence number
- Your National Insurance number
- The postcode on your licence
Check someone else’s licence
Confirm what a driver is entitled to drive and see any points, endorsements or disqualifications — for a new starter, an agency driver or a hire customer. The driver has to give you a check code first.
What you will need
- The driver’s licence number
- A check code they have generated
- Their permission to run the check
About check codes
- The driver creates it from their own licence record — you cannot generate one on their behalf.
- It lasts 21 days from the moment it is created.
- It works once. Every fresh check needs a fresh code.
Checking a whole fleet
Check codes are fine for the odd driver, but they do not scale: someone has to ask for a new one every time, and they expire. Fleets running regular checks across a driver population normally use a licence-checking bureau with direct access to DVLA driver data. The bureau collects each driver’s consent once, then re-checks automatically at whatever interval you set — typically more often for drivers carrying points or driving heavier vehicles.
