£1 Billion Boost to Repair Britain’s Run Down Transport Infrastructure

£1billion investment to repair UK roads, bridges and tunnels

The Chancellor has unveiled a £1 billion “Structures Fund to restore distressed transport infrastructure across England, backed by a further £590 million to advance the long‑promised Lower Thames Crossing.

Future‑Proofing Roads, Bridges and Tunnels

Around 3,000 bridges in Great Britain currently cannot support heavy freight or agricultural vehicles, hampering regional connectivity and logistics. In recent years, several bridge collapses have underscored the urgent need for renewal .

The Structures Fund will finance the repair and reinforcement of ageing bridges, flyovers, and tunnels, enhancing resilience against extreme weather and modern transport demands.

A Landmark Investment in the Lower Thames Crossing

Included within the fund is £590 million directed to the Lower Thames Crossing—in what is described as “the most significant road‑building project in a generation.” The new tunnel and approach roads aim to alleviate chronic congestion at Dartford and enhance freight links from the Midlands and North to southeast ports.
