Broughton Transport adds two Krone Cool Liner refrigerated trailers
Broughton Transport Solutions has strengthened its temperature-controlled transport operation with the addition of two new Krone Cool Liner refrigerated semi-trailers.
The family-run logistics business will use the new trailers mainly to transport chilled and frozen meat across Europe. The investment supports Broughton Transport’s UK and international operations while adding further capacity for temperature-sensitive loads.
Based at Broughton Gifford near Melksham in Wiltshire, Broughton Transport provides a range of logistics and haulage services. Its operation covers general haulage, pallet distribution and specialist temperature-controlled transport for customers across the UK and Europe.
The two single-temperature Krone Cool Liners will play an important role in the company’s European transport work. Their specification combines robust construction with the insulation and load security required for demanding refrigerated operations.
Krone Cool Liner built for demanding transport
Broughton Transport selected the trailers with durability, build quality and operational flexibility in mind. The company wanted equipment capable of handling intensive day-to-day use while maintaining reliable temperature control over longer international journeys.
Toby Ovens, Managing Director at Broughton, says: “We wanted refrigerated trailers which would give us the build quality, durability and operational flexibility we need for this type of work. The Krone Cool Liner specification fitted those requirements well and we have been impressed with the overall quality and finish.”
The new trailers feature Krone’s Duoplex Steel body construction. This uses sandwich panels with a steel outer skin and PVC-coated interior. The combination provides a robust body while helping to maintain the insulation performance required for refrigerated transport.
That construction is particularly relevant to operators moving chilled and frozen products across borders. Long-distance European work can place considerable demands on refrigerated equipment. Trailer reliability, insulation performance and resistance to repeated loading all play a key role in protecting temperature-sensitive goods.
The Cool Liners also feature heavy-duty aluminium flooring. Krone designs and tests the floor in accordance with EN 283, including for forklift axle loads of up to 5,500kg.
This provides the durability needed for regular loading and unloading. It also gives Broughton Transport greater confidence that the trailers can cope with the demands of intensive distribution work.
Load security and trailer protection
Load restraint also formed part of the trailer specification. Two pairs of recessed Load Lok-type rails sit within the side walls, providing additional options for securing loads during transport.
The interior also incorporates 285mm-high aluminium kick strips along both sides. These help protect the lower sections of the trailer body from damage during loading and unloading.
At the rear, the Cool Liners use Duoplex door panels and container-style double rear doors. The body also carries EN 12642 Code XL load security certification.
For a fleet operating across the UK and Europe, these features can help support consistent handling and load security procedures. They are particularly important when trailers face frequent loading activity and long-distance journeys.
Broughton Transport also placed importance on the support available from its equipment supplier.
Toby Ovens adds: “For us, it is important that the equipment is built to stand up to demanding day-to-day operations and is backed by good supplier support. Our experience with Krone throughout the specification and supply process has been very positive.”
Growing refrigerated transport capability
The investment comes as Broughton Transport continues to develop its wider fleet. The company currently operates 65 tractor units and 115 trailers, including three existing Krone trailers.
Adding two further Krone refrigerated trailers increases the company’s ability to handle temperature-controlled work without changing the wider operating model.
For operators transporting meat and other temperature-sensitive products, refrigerated trailer performance remains critical. Equipment must maintain the required conditions while also withstanding frequent use, loading activity and long-distance travel.
The new Cool Liners therefore give Broughton Transport additional capacity while maintaining a focus on durability and operational reliability.
The move also highlights the continuing importance of specialist refrigerated equipment within the wider road transport sector. As logistics businesses expand their international operations, trailers need to deliver consistent performance across a range of routes and operating conditions.
For Broughton Transport, the two new Krone Cool Liners provide additional capacity for its European temperature-controlled operation while supporting the company’s broader fleet requirements.
The investment adds to the company’s existing relationship with Krone and gives the business further refrigerated transport capability as it continues to serve customers across the UK and Europe.
