Public and private transport has brought life-enhancing change to many of our lives, enabling us to go further, faster and in more comfort – benefiting both individuals and the economy.
Although public and private transport is changing, many people still face challenges in terms of access and mobility on a daily basis.
The Department for Transport (DfT) is planning to introduce Accessible Information Regulations. Although subject to consultation, the purpose of the regulations is to place a specific requirement on all bus operators to ensure that audio-visual information such as next stop announcements are available on all local bus services across Great Britain.
SMMT has been working wikth the DfT by hosting two industry engagement sessions, consisting of operators, local authorities, manufacturers and charities. These sessions were well attended and will feed into appropriate and timely legislation that will improve accessibility for disabled and non-disabled people.
