Current repairs haven’t dented the £12bn backlog

The Government’s Road Conditions in England report released earlier this month has revealed that the proportion of trunk roads that should be considered for maintenance has increased between 2012/13 and 2013/14.

The trunk ‘A’ road figure was up to 5% whereas the trunk motorway figure was up to 3%. Motorists may have noticed this increase as the authorities are now ‘saving up’ potholes to fill them in all in one go instead of a rapid reaction teams filling them in instantly.

Every region in England except London also reported that a higher percentage of their ‘B’ and ‘C’ roads should have been considered for maintenance.

The report says that £4.2billion was spent maintaining roads in England last year, of which £0.8billion was on trunk motorways and A-roads and £3.4billion on local authority roads.

Talking to the Daily Mail, AA president Edmund King said: “Unclassified roads are in a pretty dire state with 18 per cent needing work.

“There is a certain irony about the London figures as London has the busiest roads and the greatest proportion of two-wheelers who are at greatest risk from potholes.”
