A Mitsubishi dealership in Wiltshire has been spreading the word about the help available for disabled people so that they can get out and about.

Melksham Mitsubishi joined forces with the charity Motability, Specialised Vehicle Options (SVO), which is a Motability Adaptations Partner based in Calne, and the Westbury-based service and repair centre Mobility Works for a special weekend event at its Western Way showroom to raise awareness of mobility aids.

Motability Ambassador Chris Edwards was on hand to tell people about the scheme and its benefits.

Sales Manager James Ryan said: ‘This was the first time I’ve done an event of this type and it went very well. I think everyone concerned got something from it. People were coming in with their mobility allowance to find out what it was all about. We did a couple of Motability sales on the Saturday and we’ve got a couple of people coming in because of the event, so there has definitely been a general increase in awareness. It was well worth doing and we’ll do it again next year.’

Among those who went to the event was customer John Stevens, who was getting a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – the award-winning plug-in hybrid – on the Motability scheme. He discussed with SVO the adaptations that he wanted done to the vehicle, namely, a wheelchair hoist and an electric driver’s seat.

Motability is a national charity offering disabled people the opportunity to obtain a car, powered wheelchair or scooter by using Government-funded mobility allowances. To qualify, recipients must receive a higher-rate Motability component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement. The scheme is also available to parents and carers.

It enables qualifying customers to have a new car every three years with insurance and personal accident cover, servicing and maintenance, full breakdown assistance from the RAC, free replacement tyres fitted by Kwik-Fit and windscreen replacement at no extra cost.

Motability is becoming increasingly popular at Mitsubishi dealerships. During the first quarter of this year more than 2,500 applications were received, proving how competitive Mitsubishi pricing is.

A total of 24 models across the Mitsubishi range are available under the scheme, from the UK’s best-selling Outlander PHEV and its diesel Outlander counterpart to the super-mini Mirage and awesome ASX crossover.
