Cadent selects Samsara to improve fleet safety

Cadent, the UK’s largest gas distribution network, has selected Samsara as its preferred technology partner for telematics and driver safety. The company will roll out the Samsara Connected Operations® Platform (NYSE: IOT) across approximately 2,800 commercial vehicles. The move supports Cadent’s strategic goals around digitalisation and driver road risk management.

Cadent owns, operates and maintains the gas network serving 11 million homes and businesses across much of England. It also manages the National Gas Emergency Service Line. Its vehicles do not carry the flashing blue lights of the Police, Ambulance or Fire & Rescue services. Even so, its engineers are on call 24/7 and respond to reported gas leaks within an hour, making situations safe and protecting the communities they serve.

For a service of this kind, safety is the top priority. David Garner, Chief of Safety, Health, Engineering & Environment at Cadent, explained why Samsara was the right choice. “Our selection of Samsara aligns very closely with our strategic goals,” he said. “For an essential service like ours, accurate vehicle tracking is a regulatory necessity, but our primary focus is safety. Crucially, Samsara’s technology empowers our engineers to take ownership of their own driving, moving the learning directly to the driver through in-cab alerts and the Driver App. Providing them with timely feedback and coaching on their driving behaviours.”

The deployment includes Samsara’s advanced safety features, such as AI Dash Cams and in-cab coaching. Together, these tools will help Cadent manage occupational road risk. Driving remains one of the most significant risks that employees face in their daily roles, so the rollout marks a meaningful step forward.

Colleague safety also sits at the heart of Cadent’s Safe & Well programme. The programme aims to ensure that every Cadent employee returns home safely at the end of each day. Open feedback from employees was pivotal in putting a solution in place that works for everyone.

Samsara is equally pleased with the partnership. “We are proud to be working with Cadent, an organisation whose mission is to deliver safe and reliable energy that is vital to the UK,” said Siamack Mirzaie, Area Vice President, Samsara. “Samsara is designed to provide the real-time visibility and ease-of-use that a mission-critical fleet requires. We are excited to support Cadent’s ambition to digitalise its operations, not only by enhancing driver safety but also by streamlining complex processes like defect reporting to bring huge benefits across the business.”
