Figures released today by on-line parking portal YourParkingSpace reveal that driveways and empty parking spaces made a staggering £12 million for their owners in 2017.
Further analysis shows that more than 15,000 property owners listed with YourParkingSpace made more than £500 each last year simply by renting out their empty driveways to motorists looking for cheaper or more convenient car parking.
Geographically, London is the most popular city, making up 34% of all earnings, closely followed by Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and Manchester respectively.
Harrison Woods, managing director at YourParkingSpace, said: “For many people it’s almost as if their driveways are paved with gold.
“And it doesn’t matter where you live in the UK as there’s a real opportunity to earn a decent amount from a driveway or empty parking space, as many of our customers have been doing near train stations, transport hubs, shopping centres, music and sports venues.
“Even streets with residential parking restrictions offer property owners the chance to earn extra money.”
Less obvious localities away from the parking hotspots, such as Dudley, Wolverhampton, Luton and Stoke-on-Trent, still saw empty driveways make more than £1,000 a year on average for residents using YourParkingSpace.
Harrison added: “It is free to list a driveway or empty parking space on YourParkingSpace and only takes a few minutes.
“If it is in a location where there’s a lack of affordable parking, or where there simply aren’t enough parking spaces, then it could generate a valuable additional income for the owner, as proven by our latest figures.”
