IDLE: Poor month for engine output

Engine manufacturing in February was down 2.4% on 2013 levels, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT) figures have revealed.

At 220,466 units, the slump has been attributed to plants waiting for full-scale vehicle output.

The figures mean manufacturing is down 4.3% year-to-date, with the home market – which experienced a 11.9% drop last month – down 14.6% year-to-date.

Meanwhile, output for export rose 3.9% – growing the export share to 64% of production – meaning year-to-date the market is up by 2.5%.

The SMMT predict the sector is set for major growth, with the new Jaguar Land Rover Wolverhampton plant opening next year.
