HGVC launches exclusive app to support trainee drivers

HGVC, a leading HGV driver training specialist, has launched an exclusive app to support trainee drivers and transform the driver training process – the firm’s latest step to tackle the UK’s chronic HGV driver shortage.

The new HGVC app enables trainees to track their training progress. For the first time, the app will display every step of the training and testing process in one place. In addition, the app will provide trainees with regular reminders and updates to help them stay on top of their schedules.

Importantly, the HGVC app provides trainees full access to theory test resources, including all the necessary DVSA-approved materials for their theory test preparation. It also offers them instant support through live in-app chat.

HGVC has been instrumental in helping plug the acute HGV driver shortage through its delivery of Government-funded Skills Bootcamps in HGV Driving. Launched in December 2021 by the Department for Education (DfE), Skills Bootcamps are flexible courses of up to 16 weeks, providing thousands of training slots. Between 70% and 100% of the funding is covered by the DfE.

Logistics UK’s latest Skills and Employment Update shows that between Q3 2023 and Q3 2024, the number of HGV drivers employed rose by 20.9% – an increase of nearly 55,000. However, despite this growth, the report identified that: ‘long-standing employment challenges persist, including an ageing workforce, infrastructure dissatisfaction, and limited new drivers entering the profession’.

James Clifford, CEO of HGVC, said: “The UK has experienced a problematic and long-term shortage of HGV drivers. An ageing driver population has resulted in stiff competition for skilled drivers, and there have been too many barriers to entry into the profession – especially in terms of cost and the accessibility of training. The Skills Bootcamps have made a big difference – candidates can now secure a high-paying HGV driving job in just 16 weeks. However, the industry and Government can do more. The HGVC app will make it even easier for trainees to complete their training and get working.”
