Scania Dynamic: Truck updates target efficiency and flexibility

Scania has officially unveiled its latest generation of truck updates at IAA Transportation in Hannover, introducing a comprehensive package of enhancements designed to improve efficiency, driver comfort and operational flexibility. Called Scania Dynamic, the new package reflects the manufacturer’s strategy of continuously refining its trucks, with changes designed to improve every aspect of vehicle performance and the driver experience.

Available for the Scania R-Series and S-Series, the updates have been developed around the demands of modern transport operations. For fleet operators, the changes are intended to deliver more efficient and flexible vehicles, while drivers benefit from a more comfortable and ergonomic working environment.

With the introduction of Scania Dynamic, we level up on the driver environment, as well as the energy efficiency. We make what already works, even better.”

Energy efficiency is at the heart of the Scania Dynamic update, with the manufacturer claiming the package can reduce total energy consumption by up to 2%, depending on vehicle specification and operating conditions.

For operators, even relatively small improvements in energy consumption can have a significant impact across a fleet, helping to reduce fuel or electricity costs while also lowering emissions.

The aerodynamic improvements include new digital rear-view mirrors, side-skirt extensions, redesigned A-pillars, streamlined door handles and a redesigned protruding front bumper. Together, these changes contribute to a more aerodynamic profile and help reduce energy consumption.

The benefits extend across Scania’s different powertrain technologies. For combustion-powered trucks, lower energy consumption can translate directly into reduced fuel use, while for battery-electric trucks it can reduce electricity consumption and make more efficient use of the energy stored on board.

Digital mirrors make Scania debut

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of digital rear-view mirrors on a Scania truck for the first time.

The camera-based system is designed to combine improved visibility with greater aerodynamic efficiency by reducing the air drag associated with conventional exterior mirrors.

For drivers, the digital mirrors are intended to improve visibility when reversing or manoeuvring in confined spaces. Two full-HD screens are mounted on either side of the cab, giving drivers a clear view of the area behind the truck.

The driver can adjust the camera image according to the situation, including zooming in or selecting a wider-angle view. The displays also incorporate vertically adjustable reference lines with measurements to help with manoeuvring.

The camera lenses have been designed to resist natural dirt build-up and are heated to help prevent fogging, ice and snow from affecting visibility.

The Scania Dynamic interior has also received a significant update, with a new colour scheme, revised materials and additional features aimed at improving comfort during long-distance operations.

Scania says recycled materials feature prominently in the updated cab. The curtains are made from 100% recycled material, while the ceiling panels contain 70% recycled material. New textiles have also been introduced for the beds, rear wall and ceiling, alongside revised seat upholstery.

The seats have been developed to comply with new safety regulations covering headrests, while changes to ergonomics are intended to improve comfort for both the driver and passenger.

An 800mm reclining bed option provides greater flexibility when resting in the cab, with the back section adjustable through an angle of up to 60 degrees.

Interior lighting has also been upgraded. Alongside functional white lighting, drivers can select Scania’s Ambient+ system, which provides multiple solid colours and themes including a Northern Lights setting.

The aim is to give drivers greater control over the atmosphere inside the cab and allow them to personalise their working and resting environment.

Smaller details have also been addressed. A magnetic wireless phone charger provides 15W charging and has been designed to allow air to circulate around the device, helping to reduce heat build-up.

Glove Hanger

An external ventilated glove hanger tray provides somewhere to store and dry wet or dirty gloves outside the main cab, helping to keep the interior cleaner.

Lars Gustafsson said: “For drivers who spend hours on the road, these improvements make the cab a great place to work, rest and recover. Because a relaxed driver is not only more comfortable; a more intuitive working environment supports focus, reduce fatigue and contribute to safer operations.”

New Scania driver assistance systems

Scania Dynamic also introduces improvements to lighting and driver assistance technology.

The headlights feature a new daytime running light signature and are designed to improve visibility in low-light and night-time conditions. Changes include an extended high-beam range, a wider and brighter beam and improved low-beam performance.

Automatic high beam is designed to provide appropriate illumination without unnecessarily disturbing other road users.

The latest driver assistance functions include Safe Stop Assist, Forward Distance Alert, Vulnerable Road User Alert, Speed Sign Cruise Control and Curve Speed Cruise Control.

These systems are designed to support drivers during everyday operations and contribute to smoother and safer driving.

Curve Speed Cruise Control, for example, can adjust the truck’s speed when approaching a corner, helping it negotiate bends at an appropriate speed.

The systems are intended to complement rather than replace the driver’s role, providing additional support during routine driving.

Scania Dynamic expands electric truck flexibility

The Scania Dynamic reveal also includes developments aimed specifically at supporting the transition to electric trucks.

One of the most significant is a new battery-behind-cab configuration, giving operators another way to balance driving range, payload, bodywork requirements and vehicle dimensions when specifying an electric truck.

The configuration uses two MP20 battery packs mounted behind the cab of a 6×24 chassis. The arrangement is also used on Scania’s 6×24 CNG truck and provides approximately 356kWh of installed capacity, in addition to batteries mounted on the chassis and beneath the cab.

The positioning of the additional batteries provides operators with greater freedom when determining where battery capacity is located on the vehicle.

For electric truck operators, battery packaging can be a significant consideration. Adding capacity can increase range, but additional batteries can also affect payload, available chassis space, bodywork configuration and vehicle dimensions.

By mounting additional battery packs behind the cab, Scania says operators can increase installed battery capacity without relying exclusively on chassis-mounted batteries.

This provides another option for fleets looking to configure electric trucks around specific applications while retaining a sufficiently small turning circle.

Lars Gustafsson said: “Electrification is not one-size-fits-all. For some operators, the priority is payload. For others, it is bodywork flexibility, trailer compatibility, charging strategy or maximum range. The battery-behind-cab solution gives Scania customers another tool to configure electric trucks around real-world transport needs by expanding where battery capacity can be placed.”

Rather than representing a completely new truck generation, Scania Dynamic is a broad package of improvements covering aerodynamics, powertrain efficiency, cab design, lighting, driver assistance and electric vehicle configuration.

The manufacturer says the objective is to improve the overall ownership experience while giving operators more flexibility to specify vehicles around their individual applications.

For conventional powertrains, the focus on energy efficiency can help reduce fuel consumption and operating costs. For electric trucks, improvements in efficiency can help make better use of available battery capacity, potentially supporting range and reducing electricity consumption.

At the same time, the cab updates recognise the increasingly important role of driver comfort and ergonomics in professional transport, particularly as operators continue to face challenges around driver recruitment and retention.

Scania Dynamic therefore represents an incremental approach to truck development, with improvements designed to make existing platforms more efficient, comfortable and adaptable rather than relying on a single technological change.

The new Scania Dynamic specification will be available to order from Q4 2026.
