In March 2022, FSEW set an ambitious goal to fully decarbonise its road freight operations by 2025. Today, that mission has been accomplished as the company has retired its final four diesel trucks, replacing them with six new IVECO S-Way CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles.
The 40-strong FSEW fleet now includes 35 IVECO S-Way Natural Gas trucks, each covering over 110,000 miles annually. These vehicles deliver up to a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to equivalent diesel models when powered by biomethane. Since adopting its first CNG truck in 2022, FSEW has achieved over 6.7 million miles using natural gas, resulting in an estimated CO2 saving of approximately 8,500 tonnes.
Managing Director Geoff Tomlinson explained the motivation behind the company’s decarbonisation journey, “We embarked on this mission after I read that Cardiff was the fourth-most polluted city in the UK. That was a wake-up call for me. We began decarbonising our fleet in March 2022, and I’m delighted that we’ve now reached our target.”
IVECO’s natural gas engines are designed to offer a low-carbon alternative across its range, ensuring sustainability without compromising performance. Reflecting on FSEW’s adoption of these vehicles, Geoff Tomlinson said, “We run 35 of these trucks for a reason! They’re comfortable, reliable, and their CNG engines deliver power comparable to diesel counterparts. Plus, with a CNG refuelling station conveniently located near our depot, it’s an easy choice for us to stick with these trucks.”
Mike Cutts, Full Range Director at IVECO UK, commended FSEW’s achievement, “This is exactly what the IVECO S-Way Natural Gas was designed for. Its engine delivers diesel-equivalent power with a significant CO2 reduction, while maintaining the comfort and reliability the S-Way range is known for. Decarbonising an entire fleet is a bold and admirable goal, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to FSEW for reaching this milestone.”
FSEW’s transition to an environmentally friendly fleet demonstrates its commitment to sustainability while proving that low-carbon road freight is a viable and effective option for the haulage industry.
