FRUGAL: E-Class Merc – Africa to Kent on one tank

Covering a total of 1,223miles (1,968km), a standard, British-registered, Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID has driven from Africa to the UK, non-stop, on one tank of fuel.

British journalist Andrew Frankel was behind the adventure, averaging 73.6mpg, from Tangier in Northern Africa to Kent.

Visiting two continents, four countries and three time zones, in a total time of 27 hours, shared with a relief driver, Mr Frankel arrived at Goodwood in time for the Festival of Speed.

The original intention was simply to see if it were possible to get to the UK without refuelling, but on arriving at Goodwood the fuel gauge was yet to register empty and estimated to have another 100miles in reserve.

Fitted with a scrupulously standard 80litre fuel tank (a popular £100 option), the car safely carried its occupants through heavy rain, intense heat, rush hour traffic jams and dramatic elevation.

The Mercedes E-Class is equipped with COMAND, automatic climate control, DAB and leather upholstery with heated front seats as standard.

It is available as either Saloon or Estate with prices starting from £39,880.
