SHARE: 500 car2go vehicles across London

Award-winning car-share pioneer car2go will expand their London business area next month by 100 square miles.

The scheme, run jointly by Daimler and Europcar, will see 500 smart cars be available for rent across the city.

Large areas of Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Kingston, Richmond, South Lambeth, South Southwark and Croydon will now be serviced, alongside the original areas of Islington and Sutton.

Stefan Mueller, CEO of car2go Europe GmbH, said:  “Many Londoners have already started to use this new on-demand way of travelling around the city.

“Expanding our free-floating business area allows us to offer the car2go service to even more people.”

The car2go smart mhd vehicles can be parked in all legal and unrestricted free-parking areas, without considering any fixed rental station.

In Islington and Sutton – where the service launched last December – the cars can use any metered or pay station spaces as well as any shared residential permit parking space.

Registered members can locate and hire any available car using the car2go website or smartphone app.

Cars are hired indefinitely using a card reader system, with costs of 35p per minute billed directly to the member’s account.

The rate includes fuel, insurance, road tax, parking and maintenance, and customers can drive anywhere, returning their car to any unregulated parking space within the home area.

All vehicles are smart mhd’s, a compact two-seater which emits just 98g/km of CO2 and provides automatic transmission, start-stop technology, GPS navigation and air conditioning.

Car2go currently serves more than 375,000 customers in six countries, with a total of 7,300 Smart Fortwo cars in 19 cities worldwide.

Birmingham is the other UK city which runs the scheme, which has seen more than nine million rental transactions made to date.
