Moto Hospitality has unveiled a pioneering campaign, titled ‘Cabservation,’ dedicated to bolstering the mental well-being of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers. In collaboration with esteemed mental health charities Mind and SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health), and with the valued backing of the RHA (Road Haulage Association), Moto Hospitality aims to foster a culture of connection and dialogue among drivers during their breaks at its service stations.

Within the transport and storage sector, it is distressingly estimated that 41 percent of health issues stem from work-related stress, depression, or anxiety. Ken McMeikan, the CEO of Moto, expressed immense pride in the partnership with Mind and SAMH, emphasising the campaign’s role in addressing this pressing issue during drivers’ much-needed respites at Moto service areas.

McMeikan affirmed, “Meaningful interactions play a pivotal role in nurturing improved mental health and overall well-being. Our campaign not only seeks to provide emotional support to drivers but also hopes to facilitate connections among HGV drivers, many of whom have experienced feelings of isolation while on the road.”

Recognising the profound significance of social bonds, he added, “Connecting with others can significantly enhance our mental well-being and foster a sense of belonging, a matter of utmost importance given the severe impact of the pandemic on the nation’s mental health. This challenge is further exacerbated by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.”

As an integral part of the campaign, Moto Hospitality has deployed 60 “talking benches” at its service stations nationwide. These benches serve as inviting spaces for drivers to take a seat and engage in meaningful conversations. The campaign will also leverage various platforms, including website articles, social media content, and digital signage at Moto sites, to encourage drivers to connect with their peers.

Notably, in July of the previous year, the Moto Foundation, the charitable arm of Moto Hospitality, launched a substantial five-year partnership with Mind and SAMH, with an ambitious goal of raising £1.25 million. This crucial partnership empowers Mind and SAMH to continue delivering essential support services. SAMH operates an information service along with more than 70 community-based services throughout Scotland, while Mind offers a helpline and fosters peer support communities across England and Wales.
