TMC and SureCam bring video telematics to car fleets

The Miles Consultancy (TMC) and SureCam have partnered to launch what they describe as an industry first for company car and grey fleet operations, combining video evidence and HMRC-ready business mileage data within a single system.

MilesSecure integrates TMC’s Mileage+ mileage management service with a specially designed SureCam dashcam that addresses driver privacy concerns by making video available only when required.

The companies say the solution can reduce the administrative burden associated with mileage claims while helping businesses cut fuel and insurance costs and strengthen fleet risk management.

“Privacy is the single biggest hurdle to the adoption of video telematics in the car fleet sector, so we have teamed up with SureCam to develop an integrated camera system that alleviates driver concerns while delivering proven cost and performance benefits,” explains Barry Monks, Director of The Miles Consultancy.

“We have listened to our customers to understand the fleet challenges they face and shape MilesSecure to meet their precise requirements.”

Automated mileage capture for company cars

MilesSecure automatically records vehicle mileage using telematics data from the SureCam device, allowing drivers to distinguish between business and private journeys through the Mileage+ app or online portal.

When a journey is marked as personal, its start and end locations are immediately deleted, with only the total mileage retained. This approach is designed to give employers the information required for mileage administration and compliance without retaining unnecessary details about private journeys.

The system can calculate payroll reimbursements and deductions using data taken directly from a fuel or EV payment card, or from uploaded receipts. It also produces audited, HMRC-ready compliance reports.

For businesses already using SAP Concur, MilesSecure can also integrate with the expenses management platform, helping to connect mileage and expense processes.

Privacy-focused dashcam technology

A key feature of MilesSecure is its on-demand dashcam. The system is designed to provide video evidence when a collision occurs, supporting claims management and helping fleets defend against fraudulent claims or minimise the cost of at-fault incidents.

Unlike many video telematics systems, the camera does not generate driver behaviour or incident alerts. It also does not capture video or audio inside the vehicle.

This is intended to address one of the major barriers to the adoption of connected dashcams among company car and grey fleet drivers, where concerns about privacy can make businesses reluctant to introduce video technology.

By making footage available only when needed, TMC and SureCam believe MilesSecure can give fleet operators access to the benefits of video evidence without introducing continuous in-vehicle monitoring.

Addressing grey fleet insurance risk

Sam Footer, Partnership Director at SureCam commented: “Our research tells us that company car and grey fleet vehicles represent as big an insurance risk to companies as vans, HGVs and specialist vehicles, and yet, most have avoided using connected dashcams due to privacy issues. MilesSecure overcomes all driver concerns, making video telematics a viable option for the first time, while providing the added benefits of a mileage capture solution.”

The partnership brings together mileage management and video telematics in a system specifically aimed at company car and grey fleet operations.

For fleet managers, the combination is designed to provide a single source of mileage data for reimbursement and tax administration, while retaining access to video evidence when a road incident requires investigation.

MilesSecure therefore targets two common fleet management challenges at the same time: accurately recording business mileage and managing vehicle risk, while placing driver privacy at the centre of the technology.
