Potholes are common on UK roads and are something that infuriates most drivers. Locals in Oldham were fed up with the road outside their houses being difficult to drive on, and when nothing was being done about it, they decided to take matters into their own hands.
A recent TikTok has gained over 540k views of a resident sharing the before and after pictures of what once was a badly potholed road in Oldham, to an unrecognisable road. With over 18.5k likes, it is clear she has impressed others on the social media app, with many users shocked at the cost of the new road.
The TikTok user captioned her post “when the council won’t help you so you all club together to pay for a new road”. Motoring experts from Nationwide Vehicle Contracts acknowledge that “potholes are a major inconvenience for drivers, as well as can be unaesthetic in residential areas”, so it’s no surprise the residents felt urged to relayer their road.
New road costs residents over £26K to get rid of potholes
The new road cost £26,637, which split between the houses on the road cost over £1,000 per house. Two houses in the road didn’t want to contribute, so the other houses included this extra cost in their own share.
A house on the road was valued before and after the new road was built, and now the houses have added value of £20,000. So the £1,000 investment was worth it for the residents, as it has added value to their properties.
Why does a new road add value?
Keith Hawes, Director at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, comments:
“Not only does the new road enhance the area, it also makes driving and walking more accessible for all vehicles and locals. Having a refurbished driveway and road is an appealing factor for landlords and prospective buyers.
“This is a prime example of a local community coming together. It is a shame for the residents that they weren’t able to get funding from the council to fund their new road, but the residents will reap the rewards of paying for the new road surface due to the increased value of their houses.’’
