Speed Welshpool celebrates its most successful year yet

A strong sales strategy and an adaptive business model have translated into massive volume and turnover growth for logistics specialists Speed Welshpool, as the business announces its most successful year since launching four decades ago.

In the last twelve months, the business has broken a number of its annual records, including the impressive 1000-pallet barrier on weekly input volume, and increased overall pallet movements by over 26% year-on-year.

Based in Powys, Speed Welshpool was founded in 1979 and quickly gained a strong reputation as the ‘Specialists in Rural Distribution’. However, since joining Palletways – the UK’s largest and fastest growing express palletised freight network – in 2008, the business has diversified into haulage, groupage, export and forwarding, with revenue streams growing as a direct result.

The announcement comes at an exciting time for the business, with a new operations director appointed and a recently-extended vehicle operator licence signalling that more jobs and fleet investments are still to come. Such rapid growth can affect an organisation’s standards, although this hasn’t been the case for Speed Welshpool, which achieved a coveted Palletways Service League Award in recognition of their service excellence throughout 2018.

As George Edwards, managing director at Speed Welshpool, explains, the business is gearing up for further growth: “As a family-owned business, we understand that going further for our customers is the key to our success, and this year’s outstanding figures are a testament to this. Our vision has always been ‘anything that moves through Mid-Wales, we handle it as the natural carrier of choice’ and our recently extended license will allow for this to become a reality.

“Recent appointments highlight how we continue to incorporate new skills and experience into the business and we’re also committed to making substantial investments into our fleet, which has grown by over 70% since 2015. I truly believe that a successful business never sits still, and we’re already working towards further increasing our capacity to deliver continued growth for the business. I’m looking forward to Speed Welshpool recognising the challenges ahead and overcoming them as a bigger and stronger organisation.”

Rob Gittins, managing director of Palletways UK, added: “We pride ourselves on recruiting – and retaining – the most experienced transport firms in the logistics industry, so we’re thrilled that Speed Welshpool has experienced its most successful year since its inception almost forty years ago. In the ten years that Speed Welshpool has been part of the network, the business has proven itself to be a great asset – and one which other members can look to for guidance and support.

“The business understands the challenges each partner business, area and customer faces – implementing our industry-leading IT and ETA technology to provide the highest levels of customer service. We wish the team at Speed Welshpool every success and look forward to being part of their growth journey.”

Speed Welshpool is one of over 115 independent transport providers that are part of the Palletways UK network. They benefit from shared expertise and resources from within the group to deliver consignments of palletised freight to market faster and more cost effectively than ever before. The Palletways Group, famed for its industry-leading IT developments and operational systems, comprises 450+ depots and 20 hub operations, through which it provides collection and distribution services across 24 European countries, including the UK.
