HOT: New Golf R is fastest-ever Golf
Volkswagen’s new Golf R super-hatch will become the fastest-accelerating Golf yet, it has been confirmed.
Due for official launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, the 2.0litre turbocharged Golf R will hit 0-62mph in 4.9seconds when fitted with a six-speed gearbox.
When fitted with standard manual, the 300PS vehicle – which incorporates the latest 4MOTION four-wheel drive system – will still break 62mph in 5.3seconds.
The hot hatch is also up to 18% more efficient than its predecessor, with consumption ranging from 39.8mpg to 40.9mpg and emissions cut to 159g/km.
Visually, the Golf R is distinguished by its new front bumper, with large air inlets, modified radiator grille with ‘R’ logo and newly-developed daytime running lights integrated into bi-xenon headlights.
At the side, there are bespoke body-colour sills, while behind the standard 18inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres are black-painted brake calipers with ‘R’ logos.
The brakes are all ventilated discs: 30mm by 640mm at the front and 22mm by 310mm at the rear.
At the rear, there are smoked LED tail lights, an ‘R’ diffuser and four chrome-tipped exhaust pipes – two at either side.
The interior features sports seats with a cloth centre section and Alcantara bolsters, while the instrument dials are bespoke for the R.
