PREPARE: Giro D’Italia to hit Ireland

Businesses across Ireland are being urged to ensure they have plans in place to deal with this weekend’s Giro d’Italia Big Start Stage 1.

Scheduled for May 9-11 and beginning in Belfast before heading into the Republic of Ireland, the Giro race’s Irish leg will cause various road closures.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) are warning businesses that the closures could have major consequences for freight and logistics operators trying to make deliveries during the three days of the event.

Seamus Leheny, Policy Manager for Ireland at the FTA, said: “It’s great news that such a prestigious event as the Giro d’Italia is going to take place in Northern Ireland.

“But with so many road closures planned in and around Belfast on both May 9 and 10, this is bound to cause major disruption to drivers in the area.

“FTA believes it is therefore, vitally important for freight operators to plan any collections and deliveries with their customers in and around the city accordingly, in order to avoid the road closures and traffic congestion due to the large number of spectators expected to attend the event.”
