Zapgo opens new rapid EV charging site at Cartmel Racecourse in Cumbria

Electric vehicle (EV) charge point operator Zapgo has opened a new rapid charging site at Cartmel Racecourse in Cumbria. The site gives local residents, communities and businesses faster, more convenient charging. It also supports visitors to one of the county’s most popular destinations.

Rapid EV charging in the heart of Cartmel

The site sits just off Park View and has three rapid chargers serving six parking bays. Up to six EVs can charge at the same time. Drivers can pay with all major contactless cards, which keeps the process simple.

While their vehicles charge, drivers can explore the historic attractions within a five-minute walk. These include the picturesque Cartmel Village and the 12th Century Cartmel Priory.

A gateway to the Lake District and Cumbrian coast

The new site does more than welcome visitors to Cartmel itself. It also provides valuable charging infrastructure for EV drivers heading to other popular Cumbrian attractions. Holker Hall & Gardens is an eight-minute drive from the site, and the stunning Morecambe Bay is just as close. Lake Windermere is 18 minutes away by car. Walkers can also use the site as a base for incredible routes to the Lake District Fells and along the Cumbria Coastal Way.

Accessible charging for every customer

Zapgo has designed the site to give all customers an easy-to-use and accessible experience. The bays include turning circles for wheelchair users. Each charger also has a contactless card reader.

To celebrate the launch, the site offers an introductory price of 50p per kWh for the next week.

Growing demand for public charging in Cumbria

Demand for public charging continues to grow across Cumbria and among the many people who visit the area. According to the latest figures, there are now more than 1,800 registered electric vehicles in the area. Many more drivers make trips from other parts of the country. The new site will improve access to reliable fast charging for local residents and visitors alike.

The site will be open every day of the year. The only exceptions are race days and certain event days at Cartmel Racecourse, when wider access restrictions apply.

Neil Mahapatra, CEO of Zapgo, said: “We’re thrilled to bring rapid charging to Cartmel – a prime location for EV drivers that will empower local residents and communities in Cumbria to make the move to EVs, boosting confidence for drivers visiting the area and supporting the local economy.”

Geraldine McKay, Director of Racing at Cartmel Racecourse, said: “Zapgo’s rapid charging site will support the local community, better connect Cartmel to the rest of Cumbria and the country beyond, and ensure that Cartmel and its communities are now wired up and well equipped to benefit from the UK’s EV transition. We look forward to welcoming EV drivers wanting to enjoy Cartmel’s award-winning restaurants and local attractions.”

The Reverend Nick Devenish, member of The Guild of Cartmel Traders, said: “Cartmel has been attracting visitors and pilgrims for over 800 years. Those who could afford to used to come on horseback. Today we are still attracting visitors to our restaurants, the racecourse and the Priory – and we need to serve their needs.”
