HGVT launches industry-first app to streamline HGV driver training

HGVT, the UK’s largest HGV training provider, has launched an industry-first app to help streamline the learning journey for trainee HGV drivers.

HGV TraineeThe app, available to download on the App Store now, puts the entire training journey in one app, enabling trainees to book their medical, theory and practical tests all from one place. The app also enables trainees to learn and complete mock theory and hazard perception tests and keeps individuals updated on their progress so they can see when they are ready to sit real tests.

Available for individuals on HGV driver training courses, HGVT’s app incorporates the entire learning journey meaning trainee drivers no longer need to make multiple phone calls or send emails to arrange times for their theory, hazard and practical tests. HGVT estimates that the app will replace up to 30 separate emails sent to each individual driver during their HGV training course.

HGVT has invested £150,000 in the development of the bespoke app, which required complex technical solutions to ensure that the different agencies responsible for the medical, theory and practical tests are connected. The firm is already noticing fewer calls into its customer service team and higher pass rates from those using the app.

Gary Benardout, CEO of HGVT, said: “Training to be an HGV driver requires a lot of contact with your training provider, taking mock tests, and booking and taking the real tests. But it is often an old-fashioned process using emails and phone calls, which can be frustrating for trainees and lead to missed tests and wasted money. By putting the entire training journey into one app we’ve removed this friction for the thousands of individuals that train with us every year.

“Our app is a first for the HGV training industry. Now trainees can practice mock theory and hazard perception tests, track their progress and understand when they are ready to sit the real tests and book them. When the UK needs more HGV drivers, we believe it’s the right thing to make the process of training as easy as possible to encourage more into the industry.”

Hundreds of existing trainees are already using the app. Many rate it highly. One user, Ben, said: “Brilliant App! Love the fact I can now see all my training dates and revise for my theory tests all in one place.”

Another user, Adam, said: “This app has helped me so much, with it’s easy to use interface. I could also call my training advisor from within the app as well, so I had total support throughout the revision process.”

HGVT plans to have around 4,000 trainees using the app within the next year and will roll it out to corporate customers in the coming months.
