The Department for Transport is injecting £8 million into enhancing rest areas for Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers, marking a significant stride in improving the infrastructure catering to the needs of these essential workers. A total of 39 operators responsible for roadside facilities across England will be beneficiaries of this financial support. Additionally, the industry is contributing an additional £11 million towards the cause, further reinforcing the commitment to upgrading truck stops frequented by lorry drivers.

This funding initiative stems from the Government’s HGV Parking and Driver Welfare Grant Scheme, aimed at improving conditions for HGV drivers while they are on the road. The planned improvements encompass a comprehensive overhaul of welfare facilities such as showers, rest areas, and dining options. Simultaneously, the project will expand the parking capacity for HGVs while enhancing security measures for the drivers themselves.

Richard Holden, the Roads Minister, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the tireless efforts of lorry drivers and hauliers who tirelessly transport essential goods across the nation day and night. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that these drivers have access to top-notch facilities where they can safely park, rest, and rejuvenate.

Recognising the mandatory breaks and rest periods that hauliers are required to observe, the Department for Transport (DfT) underscores the significance of improved roadside facilities in enhancing the quality of HGV drivers’ rest and recovery. This, in turn, contributes to safer roads and overall road safety.

This initiative is part of the Government’s comprehensive strategy to address the shortage of HGV drivers and bolster recruitment and retention efforts within the sector. The strategy includes a £34 million investment aimed at creating up to 11,000 HGV driver training opportunities through Skills Bootcamps, as well as a substantial 90% increase in the number of HGV driver tests compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Richard Smith, Managing Director of the Road Haulage Association (RHA), said: “We are pleased that the first tranche of grants has been announced and that lorry drivers will soon benefit from the improvements this scheme is helping to fund.

“We would encourage other operators to apply for funding to help them upgrade too. Better facilities, and more safe and secure parking for truckers are a key priority for our industry.”

The Government’s match-funding scheme makes up to £35 million available for this purpose, reinforcing its commitment to supporting and modernising the infrastructure essential for the country’s haulage industry.
