Amber Kirkby is the Fleet System Team Leader and now Samsara implementation specialist at Lanes Group PLC, a company we will all know as “Lanes for Drains”.
Over the space of 2 years, Amber has been responsible for a full system rollout to subsidiary company, Sapphire Utility Solutions, of the latest Samsara tracking and dual-facing camera systems and is now responsible for the full Lanes Group PLC Fleet of 4000+ vehicles.
Lanes, which comprises four different companies, faced challenges with non-standardised and less advanced tracking systems before adopting Samsara. It had proved impossible to bring all the data together and come up with a companywide measure or metric that could lead to improvement. Lanes were already performing well on driver metrics, but they knew improvements could be made for both safety of drivers and efficiency.
A Samsara solution had been decided before Amber started, and she was hired specifically to roll out the product. However, after doing the Samsara training, she was able to plan out where to implement Samsara Tracking in key areas across the business for maximum benefit.
She assessed which existing reports Samsara’s online reports could replace and augment with key analysis, and how they could be applied to provide the drivers with improved operational safety.
As the vans and trucks started to be upgraded to Samsara Tracking and DashCams, a comprehensive training program was rolled out, not only to show the drivers how to use the equipment but why it needed to be used.
Typical discussions around privacy came up, but drivers very quickly understood that this is there to make their lives safer and more secure.
Previously, Lanes had always presumed there were a small percentage of ‘bad actors’ putting in rogue claims and hoped Samsara would protect them further.
After 12 months, the advantages were obvious, seeing 63% of customer complaints exonerated through the duel-facing cameras. Examples include where drivers were not at fault in incidents and addressing many of these false claims head on with video evidence.
Now reporting is standardised across the complete fleet, giving one source of reporting for all and a way to universally measure the driving style of their staff.
Amber further, implemented a rewards campaign to get drivers on board with the dual-facing cameras, promoting better driving and leading to rewards for the best drivers.
This earned her the “Excellence in Driver Engagement for UK and Ireland” award from Samsara.
Lanes next steps with Samsara involve the full implementation of Samsara’s “Connected Forms” product, which will enhance the categorisation and prioritisation of issues within the company. This process is currently in the prototype stage, and Amber and her team are working on outlining the structure and ensuring all departments’ needs are met before rolling it out company wide.
Finally, the company aims to continue refining the training processes and maintaining transparent communication with drivers and managers to maximize the benefits of Samsara’s advanced features.
Amber’s focus remains on improving safety, efficiency, and driver engagement across all companies under the Lanes umbrella with Samsara’s help.
