Marks & Spencer (M&S), in collaboration with Gray & Adams, has introduced the UK’s first refrigerated electric wagon and drag vehicles. This initiative signifies a substantial advancement in sustainable and efficient food retail transportation.
The newly developed electric wagon and drag system incorporates several state-of-the-art features:
- Fully Electric Refrigeration: The prime mover unit is equipped with a Carrier fridge that operates entirely on electric power generated by the vehicle’s main engine. This design eliminates the need for separate diesel-powered refrigeration units, thereby reducing emissions.
- Hybrid Power Backup: The drag trailer is designed with a small diesel backup tank to maintain temperature control in the event of power failure. This ensures the integrity of perishable goods during transit.
- Modular Flexibility: The system allows for the detachment of the trailer at delivery points. The prime mover can then be repurposed for additional deliveries, enhancing fleet utilisation and operational efficiency.
The adoption of the wagon and drag configuration offers multiple advantages:
- Carbon Footprint Reduction: By replacing two separate rigid vehicles with a single wagon and drag unit, M&S can significantly decrease its carbon emissions. This approach aligns with the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
- Enhanced Delivery Efficiency: The ability to serve multiple locations in a single trip optimises delivery routes and reduces fuel consumption.
- Long-Term Durability: These vehicles are designed with a lifespan of up to seven years, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and return on investment.
M&S plans to integrate these innovative vehicles into 50% of its fleet within the next three months. Currently, two units are operational, with an additional 13 expected to be deployed shortly. These vehicles will operate from key M&S locations and are anticipated to become a common sight on UK roads.
Andrew Brown, Sales Director at Gray & Adams Doncaster, commented on the partnership: “These latest wagon and drag combinations continue our journey with Marks & Spencer towards zero emissions. We are committed to providing one of the most flexible, efficient, and carbon-reducing fleets in the UK.”
Marks & Spencer’s introduction of the hybrid wagon and drag fleet, in partnership with Gray & Adams, marks a significant milestone in sustainable logistics within the UK retail sector. This initiative not only enhances operational efficiency but also underscores M&S’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact through innovative transportation solutions.
