The situation arises as trucking companies continue to report that certain law enforcement officials are imposing sweeping movement restrictions on oversized cargo shipments. These restrictions are seen as contributing to increased bureaucracy and expenses.

The Heavy Transport Association has indicated that approximately five percent of its members are contemplating ceasing the transportation of oversized loads due to the ongoing unresolved situation, pending a response from police leadership.

The RHA, Heavy Transport Association, British Holiday & Home Parks Association, and National Caravan Council all emphasize that trucking companies remain committed to adhering to safety regulations.

However, police actions are driving up costs and impeding the operational efficiency of trucking companies, consequently affecting various sectors of the economy, including tourism, real estate, manufacturing, and construction. Unless these limitations are promptly addressed, there is a potential for detrimental effects on the broader UK economy.

The coalition has reached out to several chief constables to confirm whether their police forces are aligning with the Special Types General Orders (STGO) guidelines provided by the College of Policing.

In the interim, they are urging the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) to establish clear directives and best practices regarding the movement of oversized loads to ensure consistent enforcement of regulations.

They anticipate a response later this month.

The coalition advises businesses that they have the option to file a complaint about the conduct of an individual officer or police force through the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
