Metsa Wood roll out Baumann LPG-powered side loaders

Metsa Wood are enjoying the benefits of Baumann LPG-powered side loaders, as they strive to meet the demands of their customers.
The wood-based products supplier first introduced the Baumann HX four-tonne trucks to their material handling fleet 18months ago, acknowledging market-driven changes to their operational requirements.
Now, at their Widnes-based production facility, three of the eight Baumann side loaders on site are now the LPG-powered variety.
Mike Gerrard, Regional Operations Manager at Metsa Wood, said: “We now are seeing more frequent deliveries to our customers.
“They want smaller quantity deliveries but on a more frequent basis, so we have had to adjust our stocking and delivery operations here at Widnes to reflect these changes.
“With increased stock levels of finished product stored internally, we required side loaders that were environmentally friendlier, cleaner and more fuel efficient in operation, especially when working over longer shifts.”
Metsa Wood also found the dust levels previously experienced when operating traditional diesel-powered trucks within the enclosed finished goods area were significantly reduced by the new LPG vehicles.
This, they claimed, has had the effect of causing less damage to stock.
“These Baumann LPG trucks give us major environmental quality benefits, whilst also achieving significant long-term cost savings over their planned working life,” added Mr Gerrard.
“At the same time, we have found that their overall working performance is extremely good and certainly a match for diesel-powered trucks.”
Baumann met Metsa Wood’s requirements by adapting their standard LPG product offering, incorporating additional new design features.
Triplex masts, up to 5.7metres, were specified due to the low height access of the doorways, while Baumann devised an innovative alarm system based on wheel movement and mast position.
This activates if the mast is likely to strike an external access door frame.
A larger, more spacious cab has also been fitted to the four-tonne HX trucks, while more powerful LED headlights are now a standard fitment on the side loaders.
Each of the LPG Baumann side loaders are also fitted with a protective covering over the headlights to prevent any accidental damage.
