EO Charging, one of the UK’s leading electric vehicle (EV) charging manufacturers, has today completed the UK’s largest single-site charge point installation (40 EO smart-chargers) for London-based logistics firm Gnewt Cargo.

The last mile city logistics operator commissioned a total of 63 EO smart-chargers to keep its 100% electric commercial vehicle fleet on the road. Gnewt Cargo currently owns the world’s largest fully electric delivery fleet (circa 100 vehicles) and last year delivered over 2.6 million parcels across the capital emission-free. The business operates out of its main depot in Bow, London.

Gnewt Cargo worked alongside the Mayor of London’s office ahead of a successful bid to Innovate UK to fund the Low Emission Freight Trial to which charging infrastructure is an integral component. The successful bid received a total of c.£1m in funding which has been used to install a total of 63 EO smart-chargers, all connected by two eoHUB‘s. The charging system was designed by The Phoenix Works.

Charlie Jardine, Founder of EO, said:

“Whilst the Gnewt Cargo fleet is currently unique, we know that this size of EV fleets will become commonplace in cities over the next few years. We’re fully aligned to Sadiq Khan’s vision of a cleaner, greener London and know that drastic action is required if we are to reduce poisonous emissions by more than half, by 2025, across the city.

“By the end of January, London had already hit the legal air pollution limits for the whole of 2018. Whilst these are disturbing figures, we’re working closely with other fleet and logistics businesses to ensure that the appropriate electric vehicle charging infrastructure is readily available.”

Sam Clarke, Founder and now Head of Business Development at Gnewt Cargo, said:

“Gnewt has been through a rapid growth phase over the last 8 years of trading which in turn has put greater focus on the way in which our ever-increasing electric fleet recharges. I was impressed how EO tackled this unique challenge and how the innovative yet cost-effective solution was presented.”

As part of the project, EO Charging unveiled a number of key innovations for its smart charging solutions including advance load management, priority charging and demand side response. The introduction of this smart-tech has been used to combat some of the key challenges faced by large fleet operators when looking to electrify vehicles.
