The latest BVRLA Fleet Technology Report provides new insight into the status of the connected vehicle market and the impact it is having on the vehicle rental and leasing industry.
From mobility as a service (MaaS) and vehicle tracking through to more efficient maintenance and repair handling and mileage management – BVRLA members have an increasingly clear vision of how they can deliver more value with vehicle connectivity.
Unfortunately, their plans are being compromised by difficulties in getting the right access to vehicle data and concerns around GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliance.
The BVRLA worked with connected vehicle consultants SBD Automotive in producing the report, which is partly based on in-depth interviews with senior executives at ARI Fleet, Arval, Avis Budget Group, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, LeasePlan and Lex Autolease.
The report gives a behind-the-scenes perspective of manufacturers’ connected vehicle strategies and a breakdown of the most popular vehicle data used cases. It also provides a SWOT-analysis of the vehicle rental and leasing sector’s position in the connected vehicle environment and useful tips for how fleets can work more effectively with manufacturers.
“Connected vehicles and data are already having a massive impact on our members and the association is determined to help them thrive in this exciting new environment,” said BVRLA Chief Executive, Gerry Keaney.
“The whole automotive industry is grappling with the challenges and opportunities presented by this technology and the introduction of new data protection rules has added even more uncertainty.

The BVRLA Fleet Technology Report on Connected Vehicles and Data was unveiled by Keaney today at the association’s annual Fleet Technology Congress. The event, now in its fifth year, saw more than 140 delegates from across the sector gathered to hear from a range of experts on topics including mobility as a service (MaaS), future powertrains, large-scale EV deployment and business process digitisation.
