Cargo tracking on the rise

Research from Berg Insight has revealed that active tracking devices deployed in cargo loading units reached 1.5 million worldwide in 2013, growing at an annual rate of just over 22%.

Technology growth and advancements have made it more and more economically viable to track ever smaller logisitics units and with this rapid growth it is expected that within the future it will be commonplace to track not only trailers and shipping containers but even individual pallets and cargo boxes. With this in mind, and due to current forecasting based on year on year growth, it is expected that the use of cargo tracking units will reach 4.1m by 2018.

“Logistics and transportation companies need to be ready to take advantage of the increasing amount of data generated by cargo tracking solutions in order to effectively improve productivity and customer service levels” said Johan Svanberg, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight.

In Europe, Idem Telematics, Mecomo, Schmitz Cargobull and Novacom Europe are major trailer telematics solution providers with over 20,000 active units each.
