Motoring expert selects EVs to consider buying

Senior valuations editor Chris Plumb, Cap Hpi

With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, automotive data experts cap hpi has compiled a select list of vehicles worthy of driver consideration.

Senior valuations editor Chris Plumb has identified five EVs that not only perform well but also represent excellent value for money, making them a hot prospect for motorists looking to buy and potentially enter the EV market for the first time.

Chris said: “Electric vehicles are more popular than ever with 2018 seeing a 13.8 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of new pure electric vehicles registered, according to the SMMT.

“Demand for both new and used EV’s continues to grow as consumers become increasingly more comfortable with the vehicles as the technology improves along with lower running costs and an increase in charging points.”

Here are five EVs to look out for:

Nissan Leaf
First introduced into the market back in 2011 the Leaf has evolved through the years, with the latest model offering a published range of 168 miles and a further battery is due to be introduced this year offering a range of over 200 miles on a single charge. You can now pick up a used Nissan Leaf from circa £7000 and above which offers good value for money for anyone looking to enter the world of electric vehicles.

Renault Zoe
With a similar range to the Nissan Leaf, the Zoe is seen as an alternative option, you can pick up a battery leased vehicle much cheaper however, the 100% owned vehicles hold their price but tend to be very rare.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV
Mitsubishi i-MiEV offers value for money if you are looking to enter the world of EV’s or looking for a cheap second car to run. With the manufacturers stating they can do around 92 miles on a charge they are ideal for driving to the station or popping to the shops. These cars cost approx between £1.50 to £2.50 to charge, dependant on your rate, there are some running cost savings to be had. If you can find one for sale prices start around £6000.

BMW i3
On a single charge the i3 has a reported real-world range of between 100 to 125 miles for consumers who need a little further range they could consider buying the range extender model. With its unique styling, fun driving characteristic and impressive 0 to 62mph speed the i-3 has a strong offering for anyone looking to buy an EV.

Tesla Model S
The Model S was first seen on UK roads in 2014 and was seen as one of the first premium electric vehicle to be offered to UK drivers. With its impressive range, power, technology and charging network Tesla quickly developed a loyal following. Although these cars can still be seen as expensive to buy as new, used car retail prices start at £35,000.

  1. Hi, Chris. You’re slightly out of date concerning the BMW i3. Since the end of last year it now comes with a bigger 120Ah (42.2kWh) battery which gives it a real world range of 160 – 170 miles. In Europe (Inc. the UK) the petrol range extender is no longer offered as an option on these although it continues to be in the States.
