ANGRY: Does driving cause you stress?

Drivers in London are the angriest in Britain, a new study has revealed.

The poll, by ColinAppleyard.com, found motorists in the capital have the shortest fuses, with 63% claiming driving made them angrier.

Drivers in the Midlands (59%) came second, ahead of South-East England (58%) and North-West England (44%).

At the other end of the scale, Northerners in the Yorkshire area were found to be the calmest (17%), followed by those in the Scottish Highlands (19%) and South-West England (24%).

“Head South and spend a couple of hours behind a sewage waste truck on the M25 as we did once, and we dare say your goodwill’s going to evaporate.”

Robin Appleyard, Spokesperson at ColinAppleyard.com, said: “We have a rule of thumb that the nearer you get to a big city, the more likely you are to come up against road rage, and it has more-or-less been proved by these survey results.”

Mr Appleyard added that the low figure for the North came as a surprise.

“You still got some big cities up here – Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield – but drivers seem to be far more courteous than they are down South,” he added.

The survey also revealed what makes Britain’s drivers angry, with traffic jams (45%), cyclists and pedestrians (34%), waiting at traffic lights and junctions (33%) and lorries (26%) figuring prominently.

Respondents also admitted they are often anti-social on the road themselves, with 60% flashing lights, 45% beeping and 31% indulging in rude hand gestures.
