Jaguar’s most important new car in decades is finally taking shape. The Jaguar Type 01, the first production model of the brand’s radical new era, will make its full world debut in New York on 6 October 2026, almost two years after the Type 00 concept shocked the automotive world.

Although the exterior remains partly under wraps, Jaguar has now provided its first detailed look at the production car’s interior, giving us a much clearer indication of whether its ambitious reinvention can translate from concept to showroom.
The Type 01 is a four-door luxury GT and will be Jaguar’s first production model based on its dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). Its name deliberately links the new car to Jaguar’s historic Type nomenclature, from the Le Mans-winning C-Type to the E-Type and F-Type. The ‘0’ represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions, while the ‘1’ signifies the first Jaguar of a new generation.
A Jaguar interior unlike anything before it
The cabin is arguably the most interesting aspect of the Type 01 because Jaguar has resisted the increasingly familiar template of a luxury EV dominated by a huge central touchscreen.
Instead, the interior is built around a dramatic central spine running the length of the cabin. Jaguar says this creates four individual spaces, reinforcing the car’s four-seat configuration and giving the cabin a more architectural character.

In contrast to the horizontal interior design norm, we emphasise its dramatic longitudinal nature through the central spine – an architectural statement that creates four individual spaces. With authentic materials, technology on demand and reductive flowing surfaces, Type 01 presents unmistakable drama and theatre that will define the modern luxury automotive interior of the future.”
It is a significant departure from the traditional Jaguar cabin, but the approach makes sense. Rather than attempting to win a technology arms race with ever-larger screens, the Type 01 aims to make the materials, seating position and physical architecture the primary luxury experience.
The materials are similarly unconventional, with brass-inspired detailing, soft textiles and surfaces influenced by travertine. The result is intended to feel more like a contemporary luxury interior than a conventional car dashboard. A full-length glass roof adds to the sense of space, while hidden storage and technology are designed to appear only when required.

Jaguar takes a different approach to screens
Perhaps the most intriguing decision is Jaguar’s refusal to make the centre of the dashboard a conventional, landscape-oriented infotainment screen for the passenger and driver to share.
Instead, the Type 01 has a large driver-focused digital display, while key secondary functions are accessed through a much smaller, vertically orientated interface. This is a more restrained approach than the enormous screens increasingly found in premium EVs.
That decision is important because Jaguar is trying to establish a new definition of luxury. In the Type 01, technology is supposed to be available when required rather than dominating the cabin all the time.
There is also a digital ClearSight rear-view display positioned low at the base of the windscreen, aligned with the exterior mirrors. Jaguar says this positioning helps reduce the driver’s eye movement between the different rearward views.
The approach should appeal to buyers who are becoming tired of the industry’s obsession with touchscreens, although the Type 01 is hardly a return to old-fashioned physical controls. Its steering wheel incorporates haptic-touch controls and much of the car’s functionality remains digital.
More than 1,000PS
Underneath the dramatic design is some serious engineering. The Type 01 will use a three-motor all-wheel-drive system producing more than 1,000PS and over 1,300Nm of torque, making it the most powerful production Jaguar yet.

Jaguar has also drawn heavily on the expertise of its Formula E programme. Its engineers have used learnings from Jaguar TCS Racing’s all-wheel-drive control software and silicon-carbide inverters, with motorsport development also influencing regenerative braking, range and fast-charging capability.
A WLTP range of around 700km, or more than 430 miles, has been reported, while the JEA platform is designed to support rapid charging. Earlier information suggested the car could add more than 300km of range in approximately 15 minutes.
These figures position the Type 01 firmly against the most powerful and expensive electric GTs rather than conventional executive saloons.
Jaguar’s biggest gamble yet

With Type 01, we wanted every journey to be an occasion, from how it drives to how it looks and how it makes you feel. With a confidence-inspiring GT driving position, clean and sophisticated technology and dramatic styling, Type 01 has an interior like no other.”
That last point is crucial. Jaguar is no longer attempting to compete simply by offering another premium electric saloon. The Type 01 is intended to be a statement of what Jaguar becomes next.

The company’s new direction has been controversial, but the Type 01 increasingly looks more coherent than the original rebrand suggested. The production interior retains the Type 00 concept’s theatricality while introducing considerably more realism and sophistication.
The final verdict must wait until the production car is fully revealed in New York and, more importantly, driven in final specification. However, the evidence so far suggests Jaguar has not diluted the concept’s ambition.
The Type 01 will enter production in the first half of 2027, ending an approximately 18-month gap in Jaguar production.
The Type 01 is still a huge gamble, but it is becoming an increasingly convincing one. If Jaguar can combine this extraordinary design with the promised performance, range, refinement and customer experience, it could establish a genuinely distinctive position in the luxury EV market rather than simply becoming another electric car with a premium badge.
