NIGHTMARE: Poor 2013 continues for CVs

Commercial vehicle output is continuing to fall dramatically, with August figures showing a whopping 51.1% decline.

A paltry 3,694 units were produced last month, while the year-to-date output of 60,646 units represents a 16.6% drop.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) claim the output is expected to remain subdued for the rest of 2013.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, said: “Focused almost entirely on the European market, UK commercial vehicle manufacturing has been impacted by ongoing uncertainly in Eurozone countries, model changes and restructuring of some domestic operations.

“We expect overall commercial vehicle output to remain negative through the rest of the year, but some sectors may fare better with recent increases in demand for UK-built trucks and buses.”
