Janis Rimovics, a 50-year-old HGV driver, has been convicted and sentenced after a shocking incident involving drink-driving in Pagham, West Sussex. On the evening of 25 August 2024, Rimovics, who was three times over the legal alcohol limit, caused significant alarm by driving his 44-tonne lorry into a holiday park filled with families and children.
The Incident
Rimovics first struck a parked car on Church Lane before continuing to the Haven Church Farm Holiday Village. Witnesses reported the vehicle being driven erratically at speed before coming to a stop in a dead-end area of the park. Attempts to reverse failed, and Rimovics eventually fell asleep in his cab. Empty vodka bottles were found inside the vehicle, and police described him as “too intoxicated to stand” upon their arrival. A breathalyser test recorded an alcohol level of 128 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, far exceeding the legal limit of 35μg.
Police and Court Response
The police emphasised the grave danger posed by Rimovics’ actions. Acting Sergeant Steven Lambeth of Sussex Police stated: “Rimovics was in no fit state to drive and was barely able to stand, let alone operate a vehicle. He posed a serious risk not only to himself but to every other road user.” He added that drink-driving remains one of the leading causes of fatalities and serious injuries on UK roads.”
Rimovics was charged with dangerous driving and driving under the influence. At Portsmouth Crown Court on 18 October 2024, he was sentenced to four months in prison and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
Community Concerns
The incident has sparked renewed calls for vigilance against drink-driving, especially involving large vehicles like HGVs, which have the potential for catastrophic damage. Rimovics’ sentencing has been welcomed as a step toward deterring such reckless behaviour and safeguarding road users.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks of driving under the influence and the legal consequences of endangering lives on the road.
