Motor Sport Hall of Fame – Wednesday 7 June 2017 - Event Line Up

Some of the greatest names in motorsports history make up the shortlist of contenders for this year’s Motor Sports Hall of Fame ceremony.

Set to take place at the stunning Royal Automobile Club at Woodcote Park on Wednesday, June 7, the event will add four more legends to those already inducted, which include the likes of Ayrton Senna, Juan Manuel Fangio, Sir Frank Williams and Tazio Nuvolari.

Numerous stars from the world of racing and rallying will be attending, and there will be displays of famous machinery that will roar into action up the Captain’s Drive.

Static and moving vehicle displays include:

  • Barry Sheene’s 500cc title-winning Texaco-Heron Suzuki RG500, which will be ridden by three-time motorcycle world champion Freddie Spencer.
  • An ex-John Surtees MV Agusta is to be ridden by baker-turned-amateur racer Paul Hollywood. Also on display will be a kart from Henry Surtees’s early career and the Formula 2 Surtees TS10 that claimed the 1972 Formula 2 Japanese GP with Surtees Sr. behind the wheel.
  • The McLaren F2 car that Piers Courage raced to victory in the Tasman Cup of 1968, beating Pedro Rodríguez, Chris Amon, Jim Clark and Graham Hill in the final round at Longford.
  • A 1969 Sunoco Camaro Z28 replica of the Roger Penske-run car will be driven by Grand Prix winner John Watson.

Confirmed guests include:

Ari Vatanen: One of the best-known rally drivers of the 1980s and much loved by the Motor Sport rally audience, Ari was on course to win his second world championship in 1985 when an accident ended his season. He returned to win four Paris-Dakar rallies, as well as smashing the record for the Pikes Peak Hill climb in a 600bhp Peugeot 405 T16 in 1988.

Brian Redman: Up against Phil Hill and Pedro Rodríguez in this year’s sports car category, Brian might not have won Le Mans but he won every other sports car race that mattered.

Freddie Spencer: Three-time motorcycle world champion Freddie Spencer is the only man to win the 500cc and 250cc world championship classes in the same year.

David Richards: Chairman of Prodrive and winner of the world rally championship as co-driver for Ari Vatanen, David Richards and Prodrive have featured at the top of motor sport for some 30 years.

Nigel Mansell: A nominee in this year’s Formula 1 category, home hero Nigel Mansell won the world championship in 1992 and the 1993 CART Indy Car World Series.

Jackie Oliver: This Essex lad is more proud of his record as an F1 team owner than of his achievements behind the wheel. But those were varied and significant, having won both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Can-Am championship.

Murray Walker: The legendary voice of F1 who brought the sport into the homes of millions of people. Walker didn’t just commentate on F1, though, he worked in many branches of motor sport.

James Toseland: One of only two men to have won the world superbike championship for two different manufacturers, James was the 2007 World Superbike Champion on a Ten Kate Honda and also won the 2005 Superbike World Championship on a Ducati.

Tom Kristensen: We are delighted to welcome back Hall of Fame inductee and sports car legend Tom Kristensen, who won Le Mans at his first attempt in 1997 and has a record nine victories to his name.

John Watson: The former racing driver and current commentator from Northern Ireland competed in Formula 1, winning five Grands Prix and was third in the 1982 Championship. He also competed in the world sportscar championship finishing second in the 1987 season.

Limited tickets available: With only 150 tickets available to members of the public the Motor Sport Hall of Fame is this year’s most intimate and exclusive awards ceremony which enables enthusiasts to rub shoulders with stars from the worlds of Formula 1, sports cars and motorcycling before enjoying the ceremony itself.

The evening will begin with a champagne and canapé reception as you watch motor racing stars reunited with a glittering display of cars and ‘bikes. The stunning grounds of the Royal Automobile Club will set the scene for this static and moving display of historic vehicles before you relax with a three-course dinner. Tickets start at £360; for further details, auction preview drinks tickets and event news.

H&H Classics will also be hosting the first Hall of Fame auction on Monday June 6, with a catalogue of selected sports and GT cars set to go under the hammer. Tickets for the preview evening on June 5 cost £17 and include access to the following day’s sale.
