Drivers are wasting 30hours every year in gridlock, shocking new figures from Inrix have revealed.

The statistics, which place the UK as the sixth-worst country for jams in Europe, also showed London is the continent’s second most congested city, with residents spending a remarkable 82hours in traffic last year.

Congestion increased in 2013 for the first time in two years, according to the Annual Inrix Traffic Scorecard, with traffic across the EU up by 6% in the last three-quarters.

Meanwhile, a 14-mile stretch of the A4, near London, has been named the UK’s worst road for congestion; unlucky drivers spent 91hours stuck on the carriageway during 2013.

“While bad news for drivers, increases in traffic congestion in Europe are signs of a slowly recovering economy.”

Congestion was up in nine of the 18 UK cities analysed, with London (13%) suffering the biggest increase.

Greater Manchester, Merseyside and South Nottinghamshire were the second, third and fourth most congested regions, with motorists spending 46hours, 39hours and 39hours stuck on the roads respectively.

Bryan Mistele, President and CEO of Inrix, said: “So goes traffic, so goes the economy.
