One of the key roles of SMMT is to represent our members’ views to policy makers and to work with those policy makers to ensure that regulations and legislation meet the needs of society and are deliverable by industry. To achieve this end, each party needs to engage constructively with the other – not just at the time but over the long-term, building a relationship of mutual confidence.

Nowhere is this more important than around safety. This is the number one priority for vehicle manufacturers who rigorously test safety features that mitigate driver error, reduce accidents and save lives. All vehicles now protect their occupants in ways unimaginable years ago. However, while pedestrians and cyclists are also much safer, there is still more that can be done.

Our industry has a firm commitment to protect all road users as part of a holistic approach. We believe that technologies, including in-cab cameras and vehicle sensors, play a critical role in improving road safety, alongside regulations governing visibility in HGV cabs. So we will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to improve safety for all road users across our towns and cities.
