Want to know which car parts are the most commonly replaced? And in which cars? Using comprehensive in-house data, we have put together a list that clearly illustrates the facts of the matter.

Justin Smith, BreakerLink Director made the following statement about the list: “we are always gathering data on the amounts and types of car parts sold, and thus we thought it would be interesting to see if we could relate the number of part requests to common faults in some of the best-selling used cars in the UK.”.

You can discover the parts most likely to need replacing on some of the UK’s favourite second hand vehicles. To create this list we crunched the numbers on the top ten most requested parts, and then cross-referenced the results to find the makes and models with the highest numbers of requests for each type of part.

In every instance, we have given the three vehicles with the greatest number of requests for each specific part. Gain an insight into the most probable faults, issues and problems with these popular cars – helping you assess their reliability – so you can save money further down the line.

All of the supplied figures are based on a snapshot of the BreakerLink records during 2016 and is compiled of over 11,400 total requests.

  1. Engine

Unsurprisingly the number one requested part for any car is the engine – an expensive repair – making up around 1 in 20 or 5.66% of all requests.

  • Ford Focus
  • Vauxhall Astra
  • Vauxhall Corsa
  1. Gearbox

Another expensive part to replace – 4.42% of all requests in our data pool were for gearboxes, making it the second most requested part on our list.

  • Vauxhall Astra
  • Volkswagen Golf
  • Ford Focus
  1. Alternator

Newer electric and hybrid models of vehicle do not need an alternator. However many used cars have a problem with this part making up 0.9% of all requests.

  • Vauxhall Astra
  • Ford Focus
  • Vauxhall Corsa
  1. Turbo

With the stresses and strains of rattling the air into the engine it’s no wonder that the turbo is 4th on our list with 0.79% of all requests.

  • Ford Focus
  • Volkswagen Golf
  • Vauxhall Astra
  1. Starter Motor

Over a period of time the starter motor will simply wear out in your car. That’s probably why it accounts for 0.42% of all the requests on our list.

  • Vauxhall Astra
  • Toyota Avensis
  • Ford Focus
  1. Axle

The 6th part on our list with 0.38% of all requests for axles.

  • Peugeot 206
  • Iveco Daily
  • Kia Sorento
  1. Radiator

0.29% of our requests were from motorists with a need for a radiator – a vital part of the engine’s cooling system.

  • BMW 3 Series
  • Vauxhall Vectra
  • Vauxhall Astra
  1. Throttle Body

It mixes the air into the engine and is the 8th most requested part – the throttle body.

  • Ford Focus
  • Vauxhall Zafira
  • Volkswagen Polo
  1. Exhaust

With 0.25% or 1 in 400 requests for exhausts, this part is number 9 on our list.

  • Vauxhall Astra
  • Ford Fiesta
  • Vauxhall Zafira
  1. EGR Valve

Still a source of much embarrassment to many car manufacturers following the emissions scandal – the EGR is just below the exhaust at number 10 on our list with slightly less than 0.25% of all requests.

  • Vauxhall Astra
  • Vauxhall Zafira
  • Volkswagen Golf
